As The TerryReport has been writing for years, there was no good reason to jump off the deep end after 9-11, 2001. It was possible to extrapolate in either direction after that event, high or low. I preferred low. I saw plenty of evidence that those spectacular attacks were much closer to “one off” events (as the British say), rather than the beginning of a long campaign. The so called intelligence community, egged on by the intense desire for a new “long war” to replace the cold war as a constant source of fear (and funding), generally went the other way, estimating every possibility on the high end. The public, scared and surprised, drank the Kool-aid.
This is one reason that we now have virtual police state tactics at the airports. This is one source of the idea that using naked scanners on law abiding citizens in a good idea and the massive spending that goes along with the wasteful measures at airports.
The latest cache of information, coming out in the NY Times and the Washington Post, certainly backs up, if not completely confirms, the idea that bin Laden and his merry gang of murderers had no follow on plans to 9-11. As many sources have indicated, bin Laden thought those attacks would be enough to make “America withdraw from the world stage”. The ideas that were suggested for future attacks were somewhat pathetic and would have far, far less impact in the U.S. than those of September. How impressive would it be to fill up a house with natural gas and blow it up? That happens all the time in various places across the country.
The terrorists would have loved to stage another big attack, if nothing else merely as a “punctuation mark” to the first one, to show they could do it again and were still a force. So far, the excellent work of our various intelligence agencies, combined with lot of luck and the benefits of geography, have prevented them from doing so. As time goes on, the value and meaning to the terrorists and their supports of a follow up, for its own sake, decreases to near zero. It would prove nothing, but of course terrorists don’t have to be logical, do they?
As The TerryReport has pointed out on many occasions, they, the terrorists, can’t bring down the United States through terrorism. It can’t be done. They don’t fully understand this, because they have feasted for years on their own propaganda about this country and lack a simple understanding of the size, wealth and ultimate power possessed by the U.S. They don’t understand what America is because they are blinded by a combination of their own hatred and ignorance. Even those who attended college in this country failed to develop a clear and complex view that could influence their terrorist methods.
Their one chance to wreck the national economy and truly undermine national confidence was back in 2001, when they had the benefit of surprise. They failed in that effort and they really have nowhere else to turn. Having focused on “the far enemy” to try to win their cause in the Muslim world, they now see that world marching, without them, toward a much greater measure of freedom and democracy. These guys are not only pathetic, they are being turned into has beens by the movement of history they neither understand nor can manage for their goals. In time, this wave of terrorism is a problem that will take care of itself.
