The major national media have portrayed the “debt crisis” as a back and forth battle between the two political parties. Yet, it is one party, the Republicans, who triggered the crisis and who insisted they would allow the country to go into default if any tax revenues were included in the deal.

Sunday (7.30.11) the NY Times ran an article about the proposed settlement which referred to “conservatives” in the House. Here is the TerryReport response, as published by the Times online:

This sentence (in the article) should be worded differently:

"...Boehner has found it difficult to corral the most conservative wing of the rank-and-file."

It should read "radical" or absolutist or, at best, recalcitrant (although the latter would be a cop out, too). There MUST be a way of conveying the truth about the radicals in the House Republican ranks while staying within the bounds of objective reporting. Otherwise, objective  reporting is worthless.

A false narrative has been put forward in this "debt crisis" debate. The entire hold-up has been around the  Republicans, it has not been about the "back and forth" in Washington,  as ABC News stated Friday evening. One possible way to reveal the actual truth would be a news lead that says, "Democrats think they have come  up with a solution that might be supported by House Republicans". This puts the facts where the facts are, not where the false narrative would like to place them. This is NOT about favoring one side over the other.  It is about telling the plain, simple truth, no matter how much the  right might scream and moan, as they always do, about bias in the media.

We are losing a vital element of our democracy as media dumbs  itself down to try to appease the right. That element is simple truth. I would grant, as a point of discussion, that Democrats have not done everything right, but the overriding truth is that Republicans have said that would risk the nation to get their way. This is unpatriotic,  especially coming from a group that has said, during the Admin. of G.W.  Bush, that anyone who even questioned anything about the two wars was, at minimum, a borderline traitor (we are still involved in both of those wars, in case anyone missed that fact). The Republicans were  questioning the entire ability of the nation to move forward and honor  its bills, including the bills for the wars and military pay. Who is a traitor in that situation? This is beyond merely low conduct. This has never been done before while American men and women were facing guns and bombs in foreign locations.
