Office buildings in Hoboken, NJ, were evacuated. Here, office workers talk and mill about, some wearing hard hats, waiting for the word to go back inside. They were kept out about two hours. Credit: Britt Fischer

Well, one never forgets an experience like that. I was, as usual, at my laptop computer just before 2 PM eastern when the screen started shaking back and forth. I knew immediately that something was not right, but I wondered for a moment if a really big truck had gone by or something. When the shaking continued, there was no doubt.

Now I know why people in quake video look so confused: who knows what to do? I got up from my desk and walked toward the front of my office. As I did, I heard the same rumbling sound I had heard, half asleep, a year ago when another quake hit the Maryland area. Similar to, but different, than thunder. By then, I knew completely that we had a mild quake (mild by some standards, but scary enough just the same).

There’s lots of news coverage on this elsewhere, but we have some photos from the NY area to post. Hurricane coverage coming up later in the week.

What in the world is this? Now, after being told a thousand times that al Queda and the war on terrorism is the struggle of our century, it looks like the organization is 3/4s or more dead and the rest is dying. DETAILS HERE.

One of the best, most lucid and well written American history books I have ever read. This is not merely history, it is the story of much of the creation of the American nation as it entered into a long, horrid conflict with the native peoples. Reading this, you will come to understand the battles between Indians and whites with more clarity than ever before. Personalities come alive and vivid writing carries you through. Out in quality paperback now.
