The truth is something we shall seldom know, but never stop seeking.

Is a boarding pass on an airline “something extra” that you should decide you want to pay more to have? Well, apparently that is what the president of Spirit Airlines believes. If you print your own, no fee. If you “ask” the airline to print one out, it is going to cost you five dollars. Thus, we get the screaming lie of the day, highlighted below:
"We want to give [passengers] the ability to choose the extras they want without forcing them to pay for add-ons they don't want or need," Ben Baldanza, the president and CEO of Spirit, said in a statement.
"By lowering the fare for everyone and then charging only those who choose for us to print their boarding pass, we let the customer decide. It's all about consumer choice."

Mureen Dowd, the columnist for the NY Times with the dagger sharp poison pen, has rung in with a memorable column on the implosion of the Gingrich campaign
“Gingrich’s reputation as an intellectual, taken as an article of faith in Republican circles and much of the news media, is nuts. He is far more famous for his emotional bursts, from pouting and shutting down the government after he was seated in the back of Air Force One away from his man-crush Bill Clinton, to dismissing Paul Ryan’s proposal to privatize Medicare as “social engineering” than his intellectual bursts.”

THE BIG CHANGE AT SOUTHWEST FROM DISCOUNTER TO HIGHER FARES
FROM THE WSJ:
Southwest's average ticket price has jumped 39% in the past five years, while the average ticket price for domestic trips for the industry was up 10%, according to the Department of Transportation.
That's led to more markets where Southwest is sometimes higher priced than rival airlines

US Senators Ron Wyden (Oregon) and Mark Udall (Colorado) say the Patriot Act is being used far more widely to investigate American citizens than previously known. Key provisions of the law, originally passed under G.W. Bush, were extended recently. The two Democratic senators say they can’t discuss details because the Obama administration has classfied the information. Here is a quote taken from the LA TIMES:
“...Udall said the law allows the government to "place wide-ranging wiretaps on Americans without even identifying the target or location of such surveillance; target individuals who have no connection to terrorist organizations, and collect business records on law-abiding Americans, without any connection to terrorism."

ONE STORY FROM THE TORNADO IN JOPLIN:
A few blocks from St. John's hospital, where a helicopter had been blown off the roof, Zach Simonds was cleaning floors at the Greenbrier Nursing Home when he heard a "code red" announcement on the intercom. About a dozen staffers tried to gather up the 85 patients into the central hall, since the home had no basement. Some refused to budge. But most clustered in the hall.
The tornado tore the roof off the nursing home. Simonds could see cars being tossed overhead. "Everybody was praying; you could hear people praying, 'Please God don't kill me,' " he said. Then the glass-plated front of the building burst.
"It just sucked everybody out," Simonds said. He was able to duck into a closet-sized room with a few other people, including a man in a wheelchair. When he left to find help, he had to pick his way past decapitated bodies. And there was no help to be found. All the buildings he passed were destroyed. "I didn't think anybody was alive," he said.

Richard Cohen in the WashPost on Gingrich:
There is more than a little Richard Nixon in Gingrich, the same lack of place, the same keen intellect, the same petty fights and imaginary enemies, the same hallucinatory grievances, the same willingness to lie, exaggerate and smear. On a given day, Newt Gingrich could be a brilliant president. On any night, he could be a monster.

MORE ON THE JUSTIFICATIONS FOR KILLING BIN LADEN
New information obtained by Wikileaks and then forwarded to the NY Times and the WashPost by some unknown third party is providing highly useful insight into the terrorist threat, despite denounciation of the publication by the White House and others. For one thing, the documents show that, contrary to public fears after 9-11, 2001, the planning for future attacks was weak and not well focused. Here is a quote from the NY Times article published today (4.26.11)
The plots reportedly discussed by Mr. Mohammed and various operatives, none of them acted upon, included plans for a new wave of aircraft attacks on the West Coast, filling an apartment with leaked natural gas and detonating it, blowing up gas stations and even cutting the cables holding up the Brooklyn Bridge.

Understanding why these new documents reveal the terrorists to be even more pathetic than thought previously at this page.

One of the best, most lucid and well written American history books I have ever read. This is not merely history, it is the story of much of the creation of the American nation as it entered into a long, horrid conflict with the native peoples. Reading this, you will come to understand the battles between Indians and whites with more clarity than ever before. Personalities come alive and vivid writing carries you through. Out in quality paperback now.
