Occupy Denver Security Assaulted Following Peace Rally

Occupiers Tanner Spendly and Caryn Sodaro were assaulted by two  passersby during a media interview. Immediately following the incident,  Tanner sent this email:

At about 7 pm tonight two provacatoures [sic] assaulted caryn sodaro with security and tanner spendley during a fox news interview. While attempting to take her [the assailant's] picture she  grabbed my phone, at which point her boyfriend assaulted me. He was  quickly removed peacefully at which point they ran off along with the  fox reporter. We believe this was an intentional act to paint us as violent.

Tanner Spendley is filing a police report on the assault.

Description of assailants from Occupiers on scene:

Couple in mid 20s.
Lady- Black fleece and jeans, 5’5″. Dark hair.
Guy- 5’9″, sandy blonde hair, blue sweatshirt (shirt maybe said ‘Minnesota’), baseball cap.

6pm Sunset Peace Vigil Tonight – Press Release Attached

Occupy Denver is currently working to reconstruct a timeline of yesterday’s events, and to place all available unedited photographic  and video evidence in its full chronological context with statements  from witnesses.

Tonight we will gather again in solidarity to hold a Sunset Peace  Vigil.  This candlelight vigil will serve as our collective stand against violence by individuals and police, and to refocus our collective perspective on our primary goals of socioeconomic justice and peace.

- Tanner Spendley

Thank you to everyone who was at the march yesterday, to everyone who stayed through the police raid, and everyone supporting from home and  elsewhere. This movement needs us all now more than ever.

We aren’t going anywhere!

See you tonight - 6pm Sunset Peace Vigil at Civic Center Park.

OCCUPY DENVER HOLDS PEACE VIGIL IN RESPONSE TO SATURDAY’S VIOLENCE
The weekly march at Occupy Denver deteriorated into a full-fledged standoff yesterday, resulting in several confrontations between police and protesters. The primary message of the Occupy Wall Street movement  has become overshadowed in the past few weeks, as focus has shifted from demands for economic justice to 1st Amendment rights and outcries against police brutality.
The display of overt police violence at yesterday’s assembly of  peaceful protesters was entirely abhorrent. The overwhelming police presence was centered on a handful of tents in a public park. The unnecessary show of force by the Denver Police Department was not only disproportionate and inflammatory, but a vastly excessive expenditure of public funds. We urge Denver’s new Chief of Police, Robert White, to live up to his reputation for being reasonable and holding police officers under his jurisdiction accountable.
We openly condemn the Denver Police Department for using pepper  balls, shotgun-propelled beanbag rounds, pepper spray and tear gas on an entirely unarmed and nonviolent group. We have collected scores of unedited photos and videos depicting sheer brutality on the part of  police on site: officers choking already restrained protesters, using a  stun wand on a female arrestee who was already face down and pinned to the ground by an officer, verbally threatening protesters during the  standoff, and recklessly and indiscriminately deploying chemical weapons on unarmed civilians, to name a few.

‘We’re not going anywhere!’

UPDATE (OCT27 1:15 PM):

At approximately 1:30 AM Denver Police, destroyed the igloo built by Occupy Denver members as their last protection from the bitter winter.

Eye-witness reports state that at approximate 1:30 AM, at least 10 Denver Police Department officers used shovels, a battering ram, and  heavy machinery to destroy the igloo in Civic Center Park.

Occupy Denver continues to be appalled at the excessive and wasteful expenditure of tax dollars put to the effort to stifle First Amendment rights by repeatedly destroying the infrastructure and symbols of the  Occupy Denver protest.

UPDATE (OCT26 8:25 PM):

Tents stood for barely an hour when Denver Police ordered the removal of all shelter from the snow storm. Disabled veteran William Hall was  forcibly removed from his tent by DPD officers and dragged off for  arrest.

There is a continued heavy Denver Police presence at Civic Center  Park, and DPD officers have vowed to use their resources to destroy an  igloo built by Occupy Denver at 11 PM MST.

Tonight’s weather:
22 Degrees
http://www.findlocalweather.com/hourly/co/denver.html

UPDATE (OCT26 – 3:45 PM):

As the snowfall continues, exceeding 10″, the Occupiers on site at Occupy Denver have issued an

URGENT CALL TO ACTION

1. If you can have gear/equipment/clothing (including tents) to keep Occupiers warm and dry, please bring it down to Civic Center Park!
2. If *YOU* can dress warmly & come down to Civic Center  Park – preferably with a video camera – bundle up and come on down – we need to rally people to support our protection from the elements!
3. If you can’t make it, please call or email Denver Mayor Hancock at 720-865-9000 or
milehighmayor@denvergov.org

It’s cold, it’s wet, and we have people who are still occupying 24 hours a day, 7days a week. We aren’t going ANYWHERE!

These people are the heart and soul of this occupation and they need our support. Please bring down any and ALL winter supplies you can organize, including tarps, blankets, sleeping bags, etc.

Also, if you have the capability, please come down with your car, take some wet blankets, dry them and bring ‘em back!

Thanks for the support!

- Occupy Denver
