Here’s a quote from the WashPost on how and why the Obama Administration failed in the effort to close Guantanamo:
|
...the failed effort to close Guantanamo was reflective of the aspects of Obama’s leadership style that continue to distress his liberal base, a willingness to allow room for compromise and a passivity that at times permits opponents to set the agenda.

The NY Times ran a comment section Wednesday (4.20.11) on the TSA and reaction to the video tape of a child being groped by a TSA person in the name of security. Wow, this one really lit up the board. Here is one particularly memorable comment from an American now living in France who comes to the US to visit her grandchildren:

For 51 years and not once during all of that time did I ever commit a crime of any sort. During all of that time I paid my taxes, worked daily, raised children, contributed to charities, helped by volunteering and was considered an average citizen. Now, because I must travel if I want to form a relationship with my grandchildren the United States Government considers me a threat. At every step along the way of returning to France the USA govt has made it an endurance test to those with any type of handicap and left us feeling like monsters without any respect at all. It should come as no surprise then, to any TSA employee or offical that I and others such as myself, consider those individuals with the equal esteem they serve to us. I won't travel to the USA again until this problem is resolved adequently.

One of the best, most lucid and well written American history books I have ever read. This is not merely history, it is the story of much of the creation of the American nation as it entered into a long, horrid conflict with the native peoples. Reading this, you will come to understand the battles between Indians and whites with more clarity than ever before. Personalities come alive and vivid writing carries you through. Out in quality paperback now.
