Examination of the video coming in from Oslo, Norway indicates the possibility of multiple, simultaneous explosions. Further, the explosive devices used appear to have been very powerful. One appears to have been placed on an upper floor of a government building. Anyone in that area would have been killed instantly, in all likelihood. Another bomb appears to have been placed on a ground floor level across a small park from the first.

The video available at this point does not clearly indicate whether there were other explosive devices placed. One shot seems to suggest that there were at least three, but this could not be confirmed.

The likely method of setting off these devices could be any number of things, but suspicion will likely turn toward cell phone activated devices immediately.

DEATH TOLL

The idea that only one person was killed in this attack is obviously incorrect, but news reports in the early hours often cite a low death toll because that is all news organizations know about at the time. These explosions, however, appear to have been powerful enough to kill dozens of people, depending on where people were at the time of the explosion or explosions. It is sufficent to say at this point that the death toll will likely be significant.

UPDATE:

There is little doubt now that Oslo was hit today with multiple, simultaneous explosions. Video from the scene shot on cell phones shows buildings some distance away from the main government “targets” with windows blown out. There appear to have been at least two bombs placed in building across a small park from each other. The video indicates damage of what could have been a third bomb as well. While non-terrorist sources can’t be entirely ruled out at this time, these attacks have all the marks of a terrorist effort.

The best that can be said in the immediate aftermath of an event like this is that the death toll is unknown, but news organizations don’t like to make that kind of report because they like to pretend they know, even when they don’t.

UPDATE2

There are some reports that a car bomb was involved in the Oslo  attacks. The nature of the damage to the government and other buildings does not indicate this to be true. Further, while there is one car that was “blown up”, had there been a major car bomb inside, the car would not be there. It would be in thousands of pieces. What seems more likely is that someone in the car might have been involved in placing explosive devices and was killed either accidentally or intentionally once the devices had been placed. This was not a “car bomb attack”,  from all indications. The buildings damaged appear to have had explosive devices placed inside them.

UPDATE 3

Further examination of the photos of the car outside one of the buildings indicates that there could likely have been a bomb inside the car (this still does not mean the explosions were from a “car bomb”). The car’s roof is bowed upward as if an explosion occurred inside the car (the sort of pattern is common when an explosion goes off inside a vehicle). Again, at this point, it seems likely that someone in the car possibly was involved in the explosions and might have intentionally or accidentally been blown up when leaving the area. Another possibility is that one bomb was placed in a building and the second one went off in the car. We won’t know the correct answer, of course, for days or longer.  (3:05 PM)
