Divorce rates are up in rural areas of Iowa, where, not too long ago, it just didn’t seem to happen much. The NY Times reported (3.24.11) that many women, having economic independence and often making more than their husbands, are taking the option to op out. This prompted a lively online discussion about divorce, including this comment from an American living in Guatemala:

		I've been married for more than 50 years. We say hello in the mornings and good-night about 6 p.m. Is it too late to get a divorce? (Now they say, "Is it too late to divorce?") I worked with a teacher many years ago who fantasized about the advantages of of going to jail in lieu of marriage. Three meals a day (on time); clean sheets once a week (on time); dental care just down the hall; and best of all the library stops weekly at your door. Marriage or jail? Flip a coin! Oh, wait!! "Yes, dear, I'll fix the leak in the faucet after I scoop the poop from the cat-box." Death!! Where is thy sting?
