The in-coming Speaker of the House of Representatives, John Boehner, skipped the grope-a-thon at the airport by passing completely around security. Here is a clip from the NY Times:

WASHINGTON Representative John A. Boehner, the soon-to-be Republican speaker, pledged recently that he would fly commercial airlines back home to Ohio, passing up the military plane used by the current speaker, Nancy Pelosi, a Democrat. But that does not mean he will endure the hassles of ordinary passengers, including pat downs and other new security screenings.

Representative John A. Boehner passed up a military plane in returning to Ohio.

As he left Washington on Friday, Mr. Boehner headed across the Potomac River to Ronald Reagan National Airport, which was bustling with afternoon travelers. There was no waiting for Mr. Boehner, who was escorted around the identification-checking agents, the metal detectors and the body scanners, and whisked directly to the gate.

The story goes on to note that only members of the leadership in Congress who are escorted by armed guards are allowed to skip security. Governors and a few others also are given that privilege.

All of this, of course, is not right. If people are going to pass laws saying the average citizen can be x-rayed and groped at the airport, they should have to experience the same thing. On the other hand, it serves to show how ridiculous these security measures are in the first place. Once when I was departing Dulles International outside DC, the people in front of me where from the Justice Department, carrying official identification. These are people charged with enforcing America’s laws. They were forced to go through the same procedures as everyone else. Why? Just because of the wasteful and foolish ways security measures are applied in this country.

Of all the people who should never be exempt, it is the Members of Congress. They should get the full treatment. Only then will they even begin to understand what a mess they have created with the TSA.
