While the US military is said to have nearly 50 large helicopters operating in Haiti, just about everyone recognizes that is not nearly enough. Further, the military can undertake only the missions that make sense to its commanders and within the guidelines. Anything outside that often gets pushed aside, which is one reason that Doctors without Borders complained that its medical supplies were being delayed: the military had fixed priority on food and water over medical matters, which probably should have been reversed in this crisis, but was not.
More helicopters are on the way. The World Food Program has secured some choppers and will be making them available to all humanitarian agencies. The exact details are not available at this moment, but some more information should be available sometime this evening or tomorrow.
