The major damage in Haiti is not limited to Port au Prince. Towns to the west and south are also said to be in dire straights, with no way to reach any assistance and largely cut off from the world. This is from the Miami Herald:
“In the coastal city of Jacmel in southwestern Haiti, scores of homes and buildings were reduced to rubble. At a vocational and auto school, an estimated 100 students were crushed when the building collapsed, neighbors said. Several bodies could be seen amid the wreckage, and flies buzzed all over.”
Given the very dire situation in the capital, it could easily be days or weeks before any assistance reaches some of these locations. The boats and helicopters are the best means and they are in short supply. It is very clear that a disaster after the disaster is brewing in Haiti and it requires a massive, world wide response led by the United States.
