A lot of people with little or no experience in disaster relief are rushing off to Haiti with various motives. Most genuinely want to help, of course, but many are also motivated by the adventure and the ability on returning to give talks around what they did and saw, as well as provide a bump in fund raising efforts.
The short message about jumping off to Haiti is this: don’t do it. The earthquake aftermath is not a tourist destination, at least not yet and probably not for at least another year. The people there need all the help they can get, but they don’t need random volunteers with no clear mission. If you are healthy and can hook up with an established relief group that will know how to use your background and, if nothing else, your back, then have at it.
The CDC has an advisory list of things to consider, like shots, for people going to Haiti. Everyone planning a trip should read it before taking off.
