The truth is something we shall seldom know, but never stop seeking.

Editor and prime reporter is Doug Terry, a veteran television and radio reporter in   Washington, DC, (details below)

On the right and continued below is a list of organizations that are reported to be active in finding solutions for the people of Haiti, immediate or long term. The list was published online by the LA Times and it is being republished here as a public service.

Traditionally, organizations like the American Red Cross “use” disasters as a tool to gather huge donations which go into their general fund. This means you give a donation for Haiti and they use it as they see fit. In some cases, ten dollars you give now could be used to support next year’s budget at headquarters. Some people have no problem with this, and others are upset when they learn that their heartfelt donation was treated as just money, rather than for its good intentions.

All permanent Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) have regular staffs, offices, budgets and ongoing financial needs. They spend a lot of money on administrative and support prior to hitting the road. Many are permanently in the field offering assistance, some spring to action when disaster strikes. There are, for example, many NGOs that are permanently operational in Haiti and other poor countries, like Guatemala, where OXFAM has long had a presence.

The question most givers want to know, if they stop to ask questions, is how they can have the most direct impact on a disaster zone like Haiti. I don’t know the answer to that question. Finding it depends on making phone calls and doing whatever else you can before sending money. If you don’t have time for that, pick the best one you can and send away. Anyone giving over a thousand dollars, especially over ten thousand, should have done some serious background checking.

One way to increase your direct impact is to look for local efforts that don’t involve the structure of a business. Supporting evacuees, something hundreds of thousands of people did after Katrina, has both immediate effect and the psychic reward of seeing the results. In this case, as many others, however, it is more important to do something, rather than withhold participation until you can get a personal sense of involvement. Sometimes, disasters are so large and so distant that direct help is not possible.

The TerryReport has created the Haiti Coordination Group to provide information on the ground in Haiti about what is being done, what the needs are and, in general, as much information as possible about the disaster aftermath to those inside and outside Haiti. We are not accepting donations from the general public. We are seeking support from corporations, NGOs and others in the fields of broadcasting, wi-fi/Internet and telecommunications. We also need experienced volunteers in those fields. CONTACT

What in the world is this? Now, after being told a thousand times that al Queda and the war on terrorism is the struggle of our century, it looks like the organization is 3/4s or more dead and the rest is dying. DETAILS HERE.

One of the best, most lucid and well written American history books I have ever read. This is not merely history, it is the story of much of the creation of the American nation as it entered into a long, horrid conflict with the native peoples. Reading this, you will come to understand the battles between Indians and whites with more clarity than ever before. Personalities come alive and vivid writing carries you through. Out in quality paperback now.
